For the past four years, the Construction & Remodeling program at the Madison Area Technical College has been building 500-750 square foot cabins. They build them at the Commercial Avenue site over the course of the school year. At the end of the year the completed cabin is sold and moved to the buyer's land.
Last year's cabin received Energy Star certification. Among its green featurea: the cabin had a one kilowatt photovoltaic installation, recycled hardwood floors, interior doors and a window and a timber framed-roof made from recycled douglas fir beams. Furthermore, it was constructed using advanced framing techniques that maximized insulation without compromising structural integrity.
We intend to include these features in this year's cabin. Although, we already have a buyer for this year's cabin, we currently have a 550 square foot cabin for sale for approximately $40,000. That cabin can be seen at the Commercial Avenue campus.
